Welcome to the Parkmerced Vision
Our vision for the future represents a once-in-a lifetime opportunity to transform an aging housing complex and the surrounding area into a fantastic, vibrant neighborhood and an international model of urban sustainability.
Parkmerced Today
Parkmerced was designed and built in the 1940s for returning World War II veterans. Many aspects of the property are outdated and don't meet the needs of today's residents and families.
Deteriorating old buildings, limited housing types, auto-dependent design, poor street layout and a complete lack of amenities are problems that must be changed for Parkmerced to remain a viable community in the future.
Outdated design and construction technologies from the 1940s have proven to be unsustainable and highly consumptive of our limited natural resources, increasing pollution into the environment and utility costs to our residents.
The Solution
The Parkmerced vision will greatly enhance the quality of life for our residents and neighbors by transforming the property and adjacent area into a vibrant San Francisco neighborhood.
At the same time, we will create an international model of sustainability and set a worldwide standard for livable neighborhoods. This includes providing a range of sustainable transportation options, traffic improvements, state-of-the-art housing, a variety of neighborhood serving amenities, retail and office uses and usable green space, all using the most current green building practices and technologies.
This vision is achievable because Parkmerced is under single ownership, which provides us the unique ability to address challenges and make improvements in a comprehensive and dramatic way.
The Process
For over two years, we have studied and analyzed the constraints, opportunities and potential for Parkmerced. We also hired the world's leading experts in sustainability, transportation planning and urban design to help us prepare a long-range plan that will be realized over the next 20 years.
For the past year, we have involved our residents and neighbors in this process. All of the valuable input and feedback gathered has helped shape the concept plans for the future. We continue to include our residents and neighbors as we work together to further refine these concepts. Please join us for the latest round of public workshops on June 24 and June 25 for more information on what Parkmerced might look like in the future.
